1900 Census Schedules

For those who have never conducted research using Census records, take a moment to review the images below. While all census look somewhat alike, the questions asked changed slightly with each enumeration. The images below are from the 1900 Census and show the left/top half of a page, followed the the right/top half of that same page. Although this may seem confusing, it was the simplest way to show the images with sufficient detail.

This particular example is a partial page from New York state, Fulton County, the town of Johnstown. The handwriting on this page is somewhat typical of what you can expect to find — some will be neater and others may be more difficult to read. On lines 1-7 you can see the Miller household comprised of a head of household (Frank), his wife, two daughters, mother-in-law, a boarder, and a servant. By noting the name of the mother in law, you can determine the possible maiden name of Frank's wife Maria — very helpful if you didn't yet know.
